General Homeschool Resources
Your Local Library
Don’t forget about your library as an awesome resource in your homeschooling journey! I often would utilize my local library for books on topics that we were learning about at the time. I chose books that were written by authors that were obviously passionate about what we were learning about, and this would enrich our …
Christian Book Distributors
Christian Book Distributors is my go to place for buying homeschool curriculum, including workbooks, teachers guides, and resources for all styles and methods of homeschooling. They have a huge selection with competitive pricing!
Teacher Discounts
Did you know that as a homeschool parent, you may be entitled to some handsome discounts? That’s right! While some deals may require a teacher ID (which you can probably receive from your umbrella if you are a member of one) others will not require an actual ID. You can check out this exhaustive list …
Unit Studies
Unit Studies were hands down my absolute FAVORITE way to teach my children. Because I taught all 4 of my boys at the same time, all at different grade levels, I really enjoyed utilizing a unit study approach as it was a great fit for multi-level teaching. Not only this, but unit studies like the ones I mention below foster a rich learning experience through reading classic books like The Little House On The Prairie Series.
Konos Unit Study
Konos in a box is a great way to jump into unit studies for those who like to have everything included… as it says… in the box.
Thanksgiving Unit Study
Amanda Bennett has a number of unit studies. I believe this was the first unit study I ever did and it got me hooked on the notion of combining multiple subjects into a cohesive unit of study. If you love early American history, you will probably really love this curriculum. It’s rich with resources that …
Five in a Row
The five in a row series is amongst my top favorite unit studies for younger children. This one in particular is especially good for early elementary grades, as well as if you have younger children who aren’t yet in school. They will enjoy listening along too, a huge win for a busy mom. Using a …
The Prairie Primer
If you love the idea of Unit Studies but are overwhelmed at the thought of piecing something together yourself, the Prairie Primer may just be exactly what you are looking for! Perfect for K-8th. Because I love American history, simpler times and an agrarian lifestyle; the Prairie Primer was my hands down FAVORITE unit study …
Art and Music
Meet The Great Composers
A great way to expose your children to classical music, which has actually been proven to improve IQ. I know some moms who actually play classical music to their babies while they are still in the womb for this very reason. Typically, kids wouldn’t listen to classical music 🙂 , so this is a great …
Lambs Book of Art
This was my favorite art curriculum for my elementary age boys, that we could do at the kitchen table, or if it was a pleasant day, sit outside on the porch, which would help to increase their creativity.
Bible
Bible
You might not be a person of faith, but you are still very welcome here! I would be remiss not to put Bible into my resources, because for me and my family, it was a foundational part of our every day living. Not in a stuffy religious way, that’s a turn off for sure, but …
Electives
Science Electives
These are only a small sampling of the creative ways that you can have fun, learn about topics that interest you and still get to call it school! How awesome is that?! I’ll add more as we go but because I love science soooo much, I love to include living books that spark creativity and wonder! …
World Physical Geography
A well written and engaging high school elective or social studies credit. It can be used for teaching multiple grades if you want to include your middle schoolers as well using a multi-level style of teaching.
Capitalism For Kids
From the author, “Entrepreneurs, even young entrepreneurs, know that every new day is a new challenge. They know that learning must go on throughout life. They know that learning is not just something you do in school. They know that you do it every day, with every experience, if you are alert and thoughtful. …
Rosetta Stone
A favorite among homeschoolers, “Rosetta Stone is the best way to learn a foreign language. The award-winning language solution combines proven learning methods with the world’s best speech recognition technology.”
High School Curriculum
Drive Thru History Series
Don’t let history be dry and boring! History is meant to take you back in time and experience the stories as if you were living them yourself. Dave Stotts helps to make history fun and engaging by allowing you to travel back in time with him through his video series, which I used for upper …
Essentials in Writing
I used this for high school writing because it was friendly, straightforward teaching done through a DVD with a corresponding consumable workbook. From the author website, “Essentials in Writing is a complete grammar and composition curriculum for students in grades 1-12.” Nothing too flashy here but that’s probably just because English isn’t my fave subject …

Spelling and Grammar
Some days, you get called into work an extra shift, or you have a headache, or you just want to feel like you have some solid workbook pages to put in your record keeping binder. That’s where these work books can be a blessing. I do not like work books as a rule of thumb …

Cozy Family Read-Alouds
Read-alouds… perhaps you’ve never heard of the term, I hadn’t either until I started homeschooling 🙂 And then I fell in love with the concept! This definitely is under the language arts supplement category but depending on the content of the book could be cross counted as supplemental social studies or science. Read aloud’s are …

The Light and the Glory For Children
“The light and the glory for children reveals to youngsters ages 9-12 how God’s loving, guiding, and protecting hand has been upon our country from the very beginning.” (From the publisher) I used this for multilevel teaching of early American history with my four boys. Stories that paint word pictures are excellent for helping children …

201 Awesome, Magical, Bizarre and Incredible Experiments
This can be used as a supplement to help learning come alive through science experiments or, if you are very creative , you can use this as a standalone science curriculum for your elementary and even middle school age students.
Backyard Scientist
These science experiments are educational, fun and practical. Geared towards ages 9 to 14, they can easily be adapted to include all ages for multi-level teaching.
Exploring Creation Series
This was my favorite science curriculum for multi level science teaching (teaching multiple grades at once). My favorite in the series was exploring creation with zoology 3: land animals of the sixth day. My sons loved learning about all of the different animals, their habitats around the world , their quirky features… simply a fun …

Alpha-Phonics
From the author: Alpha-Phonics is an effective, step-by-step program that has taught countless homeschooled children to read, including older struggling readers, dyslexic students, and others. As a stand-alone program or supplement, Alpha-Phonics’ systematic phonetic approach will help students build a logical framework for English reading.
Learning Language Arts Through Literature
My favorite thing about this curriculum is its comprehensiveness, as it teaches everything from grammar, reading, spelling, composition, study skills, vocabulary and more. Since none of my sons particularly enjoyed language arts, this curriculum was awesome for its comprehensive, all in one approach.
Math
Teaching Textbooks
If you are intimidated by higher level math, like I was, this may be a curriculum choice you appreciate. The student can work completely independent as the lessons are taught via DVD or through an online subscription directly from teaching textbooks. There are also workbooks that come with each curriculum.
Saxon Math
For 4th-12th grade math, Saxon math is a comprehensive, no frills math curriculum. If your child is able, Saxon Math curriculum allows for independent study, as each lesson includes an introduction and explanation of new math concepts, with examples and practice problems. Saxon curriculum also continually repeats concepts to keep newly acquired skills fresh and …
