Science Electives

These are only a small sampling of the creative ways that you can have fun, learn about topics that interest you and still get to call it school! How awesome is that?! I’ll add more as we go but because I love science soooo much, I love to include living books that spark creativity and wonder!

Since science encompasses so many topics, you have the option to pursue things that peak your interest or your child’s interest. That will keep learning enjoyable, which will in turn help them not only retain the information but own it for themselves and make them a more well-rounded person with valuable life skills.

None of these resources are packaged as homeschool curriculum, that’s where you as mom, get the beautiful freedom and liberty to tailor your education to what suits your family, your learning style and your interests.

For instance, my sons loved learning about survival skills, going out into our little patch of woods and trying to build a lean-to shelter with branches or learning how to purify stream water or look for nature clues to help them figure out which direction they were traveling. Consider how this kind of situational awareness and problem solving will parlay into being a resourceful adult!!

Through the little house series, we developed a love for farming and used the Salatin semester as an entire year of science curriculum that also crossed over into some business math and research. This “homeschool science course “ is actually a large part of how we birthed our family business, Freedom Valley Farm. You just never know how the topics you choose to study could turn out to positively impact your family’s life course!

We also studied herbs and using them to help improve our health. We learned about the brain, the neurophysiology of addiction and why we wanted to steer clear of the traps of certain things that might tempt us if we weren’t aware of just how highly addicting they could be.
